Cats regulate their temperature less efficiently than humans. In hot weather, a few simple adjustments can make a world of difference to their comfort.
1. Always Fresh Water Available
Make sure your cat always has access to fresh water. Add ice cubes to the bowl or place several water stations around the home. A filtered water fountain with circulation encourages drinking.
2. Create a Cool Space
Close shutters and curtains to keep interior temperatures down. Set up a fan without directing the airflow straight at your cat. Cooling mats or damp towels on the floor are popular alternatives.
3. Brush Regularly
Regular brushing removes dead fur that traps heat in thick coats. It also prevents uncomfortable knots forming in warm weather.
4. Cooling Toys
Offer toys frozen in damp fabric, or water balloons. A bowl with floating toys makes for interactive play that keeps your cat cool at the same time.
5. Avoid the Hottest Hours
Limit play sessions to cooler times — early morning or late evening. Avoid forcing activity during the middle of the day.
Warning: excessive panting, lethargy or pale gums are signs of a veterinary emergency.
